The Mind of a 3 Year Old

We are all still processing the loss of our sweet beagle, Macy.  Robert does not yet understand the finality of death, and occasionally references her as if she's still around.  When we told Robert that Macy had died, he did not have many questions.  He simply said, "But I will miss Macy so much!" And then returned to playing.  More recently, he has questioned exactly how God "put" Macy in his heart, where we told him she would be forever.  Common questions have been, "But how did God put Macy in my heart?"  "Why did God put Macy in my heart?" "How long will Macy be in my heart?"  Last night, on the way home, the following conversation ensued:

Robert:  Daddy, HOW did God put Macy in my heart?
James (being the theology student that he is):  Well, Robert, that is one of life's great mysteries.  Do you know what a mystery is?
Robert:  No.
James:   You know on Scooby Doo, they are always trying to solve a mystery?  To figure out how something happened?
Robert:  Yes.
Kate (interjecting here to try to simplify the answer):  Robert, God is kind of like magic.  He can make anything happen!
James:  God is the greatest magician of all!
Robert:  Well, you know Scooby and Shaggy don't like monsters.  But I'm not scared of monsters!  Dad, you and I can scare those monsters away!!!!

And so it goes!
