Life's a Zoo

This summer, James spent six weeks participating in an internship through his scholarship at Vanderbilt. You can read his comments about his experience here.

While he was in Memphis, Robert and I came to visit him each week. One Sunday after church, we hit the zoo. It was one of the hottest days of the year! Robert managed the heat just fine, but James and I almost melted!

Robert enjoyed the zoo very much - especially the animals that were active or that he could see up close. He got a really good look at the cats in Cat Country and was especially interested in the tigers.....

We entered the panda exhibit just in time to watch the panda snack on some bamboo. We pushed Robert's stroller right up to the glass, and he sat still for quite a while watching the panda eat his dinner!

We also visited the elephants. This visit was shortly after one of the elephants had lost a newborn calf. The zookeeper told us that the elephants were all huddled around the grieving mother and comforting her! Poor thing!

Perhaps the best exhibits for us were the polar bears and the sea lions - because you watched them from an air conditioned exhibit!! Robert also enjoyed watching them through the glass.

Despite the heat, it was a great day, and we look forward to many more zoo trips in the years to come!
