Yesterday, Robert received his first lesson in loving and helping our fellow man. And James and I received a lesson that our 2.5 year old is much more knowledgeable and capable of understanding concepts than we thought!
After James picked up Robert from daycare, they stopped for a snack and had an encounter with a man who was asking for money to pay his cab fare. Long story short, James talked to him for a few minutes and gave him what little cash he had in his wallet. After the man left, Robert asked, "Why did you give that man your money, Daddy?" James told him that sometimes people need a little help and that we should help them, as that's what Jesus wants us to do. Robert replied, "And God?"
James relayed this story to me after he picked me up (sidenote: we are attempting family carpooling this semester as James has to drive to Nashville 4 days per week). I was touched and amazed at Robert's ability to understand.
Later, at dinner (probably 3 hours after the event), Robert looked at me and said, "Daddy gave money to that man because he needed help, Mommy."
"If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth."
1 John 3:17-18
