Today, we celebrate your third birthday.

It seems like just yesterday we were excited new parents.... Exactly three years ago, you were just a few hours old. You had been taken back to the nursery to be checked out by the doctors, and we couldn't wait for you to be brought back to the hospital room so that we could love on you! Little did we know, you would end up staying in the nursery for a while (actually, about a week), but we were soon able to take you home and start our new life with our new son! We have watched you grow over the last three years into a very loving, caring, and happy child. Your presence makes everyone in the room smile, and we love laughing with you at your silliness.
At age 3, here are some things about you:
1. Spiderman and Batman are very cool superheros to you and your school friends. You often pretend to be one of them during gym time at school.
2. Your favorite movie is Toy Story (Woody, Buzz Lightyear). You do not like Sid's mean dog from this movie, though. You call him the "cowboy dog."
3. You enjoy watching Curious George, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Caillou, Barney, and sometimes Sesame Street/Elmo. We have let you watch a little too much television over the last year due to a really, really, really long commute to Nashville. Your daddy does a really good job of teaching you things and entertaining you when you commute with him, but mama usually lets you watch a movie for the hour drive. When you transition closer to home, your television time (namely DVD's in the car) will drastically reduce. I have a feeling you will not be a fan of this development!
4. As you have been your entire life, your favorite place to be is outside. You love to ride your little powerwheels 4wheeler, play ball, play in your swimming pool, and play fetch ("petch") with Anna. You also enjoy helping your mama water the flowers and helping your daddy work on cars and carpentry projects.
5. Your favorite thing to do right now when you are outside is to ride your 4-wheeler to the far corner of the yard (where there are some pine trees) and pick up sticks. You also love to bang the sticks onto the trunks of the trees and break the sticks.
6. You still are not a big fan of loud noises. Sometimes in church, your Daddy will start to preach, and you will look at me and say (in a not-so-soft-voice), "That's TOO LOUD!" Mr. Bobby and Mrs. Barbara, who sit in front of us, often exchange a smile when you do this!
7. You sleep in a tent that we have placed on the floor in your room. You LOVE your tent and especially love if Mommy and Daddy will both crawl into the tent with you when it's bedtime. Mama should have bought a bigger tent!
8. You love our dogs, Macy and Anna. You like to go out and "get them" if they wander too far away in the yard. You do this by being really bossy and giving them a firm, "Come on, Macy!" I have no idea who taught you to talk to your dogs this way. ;-)
9. Balls are still your favorite toy.
10. You're not too into puzzles, but you LOVE books and love for anyone to read them to you. Right now, your favorites include "The Three Little Pigs," "The Three Little CAJUN Pigs," "The Three Bears," "Jack and the Beanstalk," and your Curious George books.
11. Next week will be your last week of daycare at your current school. Mama is really sad about this. You will get to spend the rest of the summer with your Daddy and will start a new school (closer to home) in August.
12. For your birthday, you asked for a backpack ("packpack") and a suitcase. I wonder where you're headed when you get them?
13. You went to the movies with your dad for the first time last week. You saw "Kung Fu Panda 2." You liked it, but it was a little long for your attention span!
14. Your favorite foods: You will eat almost anything and are very good about eating what's served. Some of your favorites include: Strawberries, Roasted Chicken, Broccoli, Green Beans, Peas, Yogurt, Applesauce, Cheese, Pears, SQUASH CASSEROLE (this is a new find - you love it!), and the old typical kid standards -- pizza, any kind of pasta, and grilled cheese sandwiches. One thing you're not crazy about is french fries. But you love to get a cheeseburger at McDonald's because you love to eat the PICKLES off of it. You rarely eat the bun and usually just eat the patty, cheese, and pickles.
15. Your imagination is going wild these days, and it's lots of fun for us to watch. You often play like you are "slaying the lions" when you are outside playing. At school, your teachers tell me that you organize the class into make-believe outings such as going to a football game or visiting the zoo. When you "visit the zoo," you lead the children around the room with a camera on your neck, pointing out the different animals you are seeing.
16. You will soon visit the beach for the FIRST time. This is long overdue, but the first three years of your life have been overwhelmingly busy for mom and dad. We are very excited about this trip and have made the mistake of telling you about it too early. You often get in the car and ask if we are going to the beach - then get upset when we tell you that it's not time yet!
17. You often talk about what you will do when you get "big and strong" like Daddy. You want to be a fireman, a football player, and a basketball player.
18. Your best friends remain Hayden and Garrett, your two friends from school. You have been with them since August 2009, and you three are the three musketeers!
19. You are very, very attached to your school teachers (especially Miss Betty), and I worry about how you will handle the new transition. But, your heart is big, and I know you will have room for new friends and teachers at your new school.
20. Your dad is your hero, as he should be. You love immitating him. You often practice "preaching your sermon." We love hearing you preach!
21. You love love love music. You have a collection of instruments now and love to engage people in a marching band. You also love singing in the microphone at church. Your favorite songs today are "Bingo" and "Old MacDonald."
22. My favorite thing about you is your capacity to love and show love. You love to hug on us and tell us how much you love us. My favorite thing is for you to hug one of us then reach for the other parent for a group hug. Special moments that I will never forget!
There are many, many more highlights of my 3 year old Robert, but I think I will stop there. Robert, thank you for the joy that you bring to our lives each day. We are so blessed to have the privilege of raising you, and we are so excited to watch you grow. Your future is definitely bright! Happy Birthday, sweet boy.
Much much love,
Mom and Dad
So sweet! Robert will love reading this!
