Five on Friday - 9/9/11

1.  Has this not seemed like the longest short week ever?  Time off from work just makes me want more time off!  My countdown to relief is steadily ticking down, though.  Three more weeks!  Three more weeks!

2.  We are gearing up for a big joint worship service on Sunday (both churches worshipping together), followed by an annual BBQ lunch.  And then revival on both Monday and Tuesday nights.  A busy start to the week, but it means that my menu planning has been pretty easy!

3.  It is so hard to believe that it has been 10 years since September 11th.  That day is so vividly clear in my memory, and yet in ways it seems like it was a lifetime ago.  I have spent some time this week reading media coverage of "10 Years Later," and my heart has been torn apart yet again, mourning especially for the children who lost their parents on that terrible day.  But the stories are also filled once again with the tales of heroism that emerged in the weeks after the tragedy.  One story that stood out to me was that of a young man named Welles Crowther who worked in the World Trade Center and became known among his colleagues for always wearing a red bandana, a trademark that was passed down to him from his grandfather.  Welles survived the initial impact and made a call to his father.  However, that phone call would be his last.  Months later, his mother read an article which detailed witness accounts of how they were rescued from a smoke-filled stairwell by a man who had covered his nose and mouth with a red bandana.  Welles' body was discovered six months after the attack, under a stairwell.    That's the human spirit that I choose to believe in -- and although I certainly will mourn those lost on September 11th, I am also eternally proud of the everyday heroes who risked and gave their lives to help others.

4.  September 11th is also my late Maw Maw's birthday.  She would have been 94.  How I wish she and Robert could celebrate together over a good piece of buttermilk poundcake!

5.  Saving the best for last - - GUESS WHO has gone to preschool 2 days this week without tears?!?!?!?!?

The owner of this brand new spiderman costume - THAT'S who! ;-)
